Description

This undated photograph taken by W. Newton Turner (1910-1995) shows a stickball game at the Cherokee Indian Fair. From the time it was first held regularly in 1914, one of the primary functions of the Cherokee Indian Fair has been to sponsor craft competitions that provide a showcase for Cherokee craftspeople to display the wide variety and high quality of their work. Turner began teaching as an assistant professor of geology and geography in 1937 and filled a variety of roles before retiring on December 29, 1971 as Vice President of Western Carolina University.
