Matt Buchanan is interviewed by a Smoky Mountain High School student as a part of Mountain People, Mountain Lives: A Student Led Oral History Project. Born in 1986, Buchanan grew up in Burke County and enlisted in the army at the age of 20. He talks about basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, his time in Fort Benning, Georgia, and his seventeen months of active duty in Iraq. Buchanan discusses difficulties with reintegrating to civilian life, the veterans’ group he started at Western Carolina University, and his role as administrator on social media platforms tracking veterans and watching for depression or other issues.
