Abstract

Risk and Resiliency are important constructs to research because they are highly correlated with an individual's overall physical and psychological health throughout life. The purpose of this study was to examine differences between resilient and non-resilient individuals on measures of family adaptability, internalizing disorders, externalizing disorders, individual adaptive functioning, and locus of control. Participants included 97 undergraduate students who were administered the Achenbach Adult Self Report (ASEBA; Achenbach & Rescorla, 2003), as a measure of adaptive functioning, internalizing disorders, and externalizing disorders. The Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale - 2 (FACES II; Olson, 1992) was administered as a measure of family adaptability. The Levenson's Locus of Control Scale (Levenson, 1981) was administered as a measure of locus of control. Finally, the Resiliency Attitudes Scale (RAS; Biscoe & Harris, 1994) was administered as a measure of resiliency. A MANOVA was used to examine differences between family adaptability, internalizing disorders, externalizing disorder, adaptive functioning, and locus of control in resilient versus non-resilient individuals. Results revealed statistically significant findings for differences in family adaptability, internalizing disorders, adaptive functioning, and external locus of control. Additional findings and implications of the research will be discussed.
