Abstract

The effects of a three-component intervention model on the body-image, self-concept, and physical fitness of 9 to 12 year-old girls was examined. The three components of intervention were nutrition education, physical fitness, and cognitive behavioral therapy. Past research has focused on one or maybe two aspects of intervention. Therefore, this intervention is rather novel. Pre- test and post-test measures were conducted to assess the participant's physical fitness and health as well as their cognitions related to body image and self-concept. It was hypothesized that the participants would improve on measures of body image, social self-concept, physical self-concept, and competency as well as on measures of physical health and fitness. Results revealed no significant differences in Social Self-Concept, Physical Self-Concept, Competence Self-Concept, or any indices of physical fitness from pre- intervention to post-intervention. There was a statistically significant difference from pre-intervention to post-intervention on a measure of body esteem. Exploratory analyses also revealed differences from pre-intervention to post-intervention on Affect Self-Concept and Body Perception in Distressing Situations. Implications of the results will be discussed in the paper.
