Abstract

The differences in how African-American and Caucasian females evaluate direct physical, direct nonphysical and indirect forms of aggression are investigated. Direct physical aggression refers to harming or threatening to harm another person. Direct nonphysical aggression refers to behaviors involving verbal confrontations, and indirect aggression refers to covert social manipulation. Participants include 60 females, ages 18-30, half African-American and half Caucasian. It is hypothesized that Caucasian females will rate the two direct forms of aggression as less acceptable than indirect aggression, but African-American females will find the direct forms more acceptable than the indirect forms. Results reveal that Caucasian females find indirect and direct physical aggression equally acceptable and they find direct nonphysical most acceptable. African-American females as hypothesized find direct forms of aggression more acceptable than indirect forms. Overall, African-American females find all forms of aggression more acceptable than Caucasian females find them. Differences in African-American and Caucasian females approval of and engagement in direct physical aggression were significant. Practical implications and directions for future research will be discussed in the paper.
