Abstract

This study was designed to test for memory deficits that could be associated with the suppression of positive emotions. Eighty participants were shown video clips of a male and female comedian and given demographic information about the comedians. The emotional expressions of the participants were recorded via videotape. Participants were assigned to one of two conditions: a control condition, in which they were asked to watch the film clip carefully, or an emotional suppression condition, in which participants were asked not to show any emotion in response to the film. After spending 3 minutes on a distracter task, the MS-100 Questionnaire, participants were asked to complete a memory test for the demographic information provided about the comedians and information presented during their comedy routines. Behavioral ratings show that the participants in the suppression condition showed less emotion than participants in the control condition. Memory test results show no difference in memory scores for participants in the control and suppression groups. These results suggest that the suppression of positive emotion may not have adverse cognitive consequences.
