Abstract

Obesity among adults and children has been increasing over the years despite the perceived importance of health and fitness in our society. For adolescent girls, being overweight only adds to other problems of body image and self-concept they experience. The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of a 16-week program for college students targeting physical fitness, cognitive behavioral functioning, and nutrition knowledge. The purpose of the intervention was to give participants the skills and information to make healthier choices for themselves. Participants included 5 college students, 4 males and 1 female, ages 19 through 22, from a university in rural Appalachia. Participants voluntarily signed up to participate in the Life Fit course. The participants were administered the Multidimensional Self-Concept Scale (MSCS; Bracken, 1992) before and after the intervention. Physical assessments and demographic data were also collected on all of the participants both before and after the intervention. Paired samples t-tests were used to examine differences between pretest and posttest in specific dimensions of self-concept, body image, and physical functioning. Results revealed no significant differences between pretest and posttest results. Implications and areas for future research will be discussed within the paper.
