Abstract

This study used undergraduate participants from Western Carolina University and the University of North Carolina at Asheville to examine the relationships between the variables of religiosity, or strength of religious belief, religion, political orientation, defined as liberal to conservative, political affiliation, and socioeconomic status with undergraduate students' choice of college major. The study found that the relationships between both religiosity and religion with major were significant when using a sample combining the participants from both schools, but that this relationship did not exist when the two locations were analyzed separately, thus indicating that the result was confounded by the inherent differences between the two locations. The study found a similar result for political affiliation, where a significant relationship was found for the combined schools sample, but was confounded by the different populations of the two schools. No relationships were found for political orientation or for socioeconomic status.
