Abstract
In my thesis exhibition work, I have attempted to give formal presence to narratives based on personal experiences and imagined scenarios relating to the theme of ""sky."" By interpreting the stories and then translating them into fabric, photography, and multimedia pieces, my artwork is intended to explain a narrative and theme within a multitude of media and formats. The main drive behind the work in my exhibition is a visual source based in symbolic and natural imagery, as well as references to fictional characters in a surrealistic narrative I have written entitled Of the Sky."" My endeavor in this thesis show is to explore the Of the Sky story through illustration that is expressed through a diverse format of artistic media and processes. That is, the show will contain two-dimensional digital prints that are collages of photographs of my drawings and paintings with fashion photography, stitching and sculptural collaged elements---- and thought these works are a hybrid of many media, they are closest akin to the traditional illustrated storybook, or even graphic novel. This work will serve as the conceptual basis for the rest of the work in the exhibition, for all of the garments and sculptures are made to further illustrate the story. As a fashion and costume designer, my thesis exhibition will show the garments I create displayed on dress forms within a gallery setting. However, the thesis exhibition will also include documentation of the same garments showcased within a collaborative, multimedia performance exhibition that I co-wrote, co-directed, and coproduced with the artist R. Brooke Priddy, called The Opening of Sky and Sea. In both the gallery and performance context, I strive for the garments to maintain their conceptual ideology as part of a narrative that refers to the theme of sky. I am also attempting to merge contemporary fashion with concepts of hybrid media that are executed in contemporary fine art, because the work relies and exists within a conceptual framework, but is not bound to a single medium or creative process for express ion. Therefore, the main focus of my thesis exhibition is to show all of the work I have created-- both as an artist working independently and within a collaborative format--- as it is expressed through a broad range of media. The common thread that exists within the work is it's relation to the theme of sky, and to the narratives that I have written as a basis to explore and express the imaginary world I have invented that takes place in the sky
