Abstract
The original Asch conformity study (1951) found high levels of conformity, however there were also marked individual differences between the subjects. At the time Asch did not have a framework for discussing the personality differences between the conformists and non-conformists. Recently the Five-Factor Model of personality has become the most widely accepted model of personality. Armed with this new model the present study replicated the original Asch conformity study (Asch, 1951) while also measuring personality variables using the Five-Factor Model. It was hypothesized that the Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Openness to Experience and Extraversion domains will correlate with conformity. And that the Five-Factor model would he predictive of conformity scores as well as the presence of conformity. Participants were recruited from introductory psychology classes and completed the experiment in exchange for research credit. Four undergraduate students enrolled in upper level psychology classes served as confederates in the experiment. Participants completed the Asch Conformity portion of the experiment before filling out the personality inventory. Pearson correlations were used to test for correlations between personality scores and conformity scores. Multiple and logistic regressions were used to test for the predictive value of personality on conformity. No link between any personality domain and conformity was found. However there was a moderate correlation between the Artistic Interest facet and conformity. The lack of correlation may be the result of problems with recruitment of participants and attendance of confederates.
