Abstract
The last century has seen an abundance of research on various emotions like anger, sadness, love, or joy. However, there are still some emotions we know little about. One of these is hate. To date, no one has developed a measure of hate. The current study sought to create a measure of hate based on Sternberg's Triangular Theory of Hate. Statements gathered in a pilot study were used to create the Hate Scale. The Hate Scale was composed of three subscales: disgust, passion, and commitment. A factor analysis revealed support for the three factor structure. In addition, a reliability analysis supported internal consistency of the scale. Correlations between the Hate Scale and convergent/divergent scales further demonstrated external consistency of the scale. Collectively, these results showed support for Sternberg's Triangular Theory of Hate.
