Description

In this letter of February 14, 1863, Levi Morrison Bogart (1842-1865) writes his sister M. J. Misemer from Vicksburg, Mississippi. Bogart describes seeing the Union soldiers and boats on the Mississippi River. He inquires about the health of her children, Charly and Lizzy, and asks her to tell Charly that he hopes the fighting starts soon so he can come home. Bogart describes his reasons for fighting for the Confederacy, and the difficulty of fighting against his own brothers. He says that he is doing his best to write often, but he has a difficult time paying for postage and is instead franking his letters. He implores Martha to write more often as this is his only way of getting news from home.
