Description

Brasstown Carvers A. Ben Hall, John Hall, and Jack Hall carving under a tree, c. 1955. Brothers John Hall (1875-1962) and Ben Hall moved to the Brasstown area from Buncombe County, NC, in the 1920s. Many members of their extended family were also part of the Brasstown Carvers, including Ben's son Jack Hall (1920-1984). A short documentary about Jack, titled "The Woodland Carver," brought notoriety to Jack and John C. Campbell Folk School in the early 1950s. Following Murray Martin’s retirement, Jack led the Brasstown Carvers until the early 1980s.
