Description
Murrial "Murray" Martin oversees the carving of Jack Carpenter (right) and another young man, 1952. Murrial "Murray" Galt Martin (1902-2005) came to John C. Campbell Folk School in the early 1930s and in 1935 became the carving instructor there. In this position, she oversaw the Brasstown Carvers until 1973. Murray had an immeasurable impact on several generations of Brasstown Carvers as their teacher, mentor, and friend. She designed many of the Brasstown Carvers’ patterns, including napkin rings and creche figures.
