Description
This portrait of George Masa (1885-1933) was hanging in Plateau Studio in Asheville when Ewart M. Ball bought the studio from Masa in 1922. His grandson, Ewart M. Ball III, sent the image to Carole Currie, the lifestyle editor of the Asheville Citizen Times in July 1985. It is inscribed at the base “George Masahara Iizuka” in a folder imprinted “Plateau Studio 1 ½ Biltmore Ave. Asheville, N.C. Masa went by at least four different names in his lifetime. According to research done by Janet McCue and Paul Bonesteel, Masa was born to Mr. Takahasi, adopted and raised as Shoji Endo, fleeing trouble, changed his name to George Masaharu Iizuka, which became George Masa. This item is from the Hart Masa Collection, a collection of photographs, publications, postcards, correspondence, and ephemera related to the life and work of photographer George Masa. Known for his iconic images of the Southern Appalachian Mountains and his advocacy for the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Masa also produced commercial work for private businesses, publishers, news services, and other entities. The Hart Masa Collection was assembled by donors William A. Hart, Jr., and Alice Huff Hart, who provided much of the contextual information for the items in this collection.
