Description

This reproduction of a 1931 George Masa (1885-1933) photograph has written on the reverse, “Courtesy Barbara Thorne; Three Forks Camp of Tom Alexander; Great Smoky Mountains National Park.” Men and women are gathered around a fire at Tom Alexander’s tourist fish camp known as Three Forks. The camp was located at the headwaters of Raven Fork, a tributary of the Oconaluftee River. Masa’s homemade measuring wheel is leaning against a tent pole and camp cook Avery Gouge stands behind the group wearing his apron. A portion of Masa’s identifying number, -5799, is found on the bottom left. This item is from the Hart Masa Collection, a collection of photographs, publications, postcards, correspondence, and ephemera related to the life and work of photographer George Masa. Known for his iconic images of the Southern Appalachian Mountains and his advocacy for the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Masa also produced commercial work for private businesses, publishers, news services, and other entities. The Hart Masa Collection was assembled by donors William A. Hart, Jr., and Alice Huff Hart, who provided much of the contextual information for the items in this collection.
