Description

This George Masa (1885-1933) photograph of Indian Creek Falls in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has labeled on the reverse, “Rockefeller donates new national park! As a memorial to his late wife, Laura Spelman Rockefeller, John D. Rockefeller has donated a large tract of wooded, mountainous land on the border between Tennessee and North Carolina, not far from Asheville N.C. to be known as the Smoky Mountains National Park. Photo shows the Queens Creek Falls in Smoky Mountain National Park - one of the picturesque spots in the new park.” Dated 3-15-28. The image was used to create the postcard published by Deuel News Co. Asheville, N. C. labeled “Indian Creek Falls, Great Smoky Mountains National Park” and is actually Indian Creek Falls, located on Indian Creek, near Deep Creek. Masa’s identifying number, 0-1774, is found on the bottom left. These items are from the Hart Masa Collection, a collection of photographs, publications, postcards, correspondence, and ephemera related to the life and work of photographer George Masa. Known for his iconic images of the Southern Appalachian Mountains and his advocacy for the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Masa also produced commercial work for private businesses, publishers, news services, and other entities. The Hart Masa Collection was assembled by donors William A. Hart, Jr., and Alice Huff Hart, who provided much of the contextual information for the items in this collection.
