Description
This George Masa (1885-1933) photograph of Tom Branch Falls in the Deep Creek area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was used to create postcards published by the Asheville Post Card Company. One of the postcards is mislabeled as “Laurel Falls near Bryson City,” the other is labeled “One of the numerous pretty waterfalls in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.” Masa’s identifying number is found on the bottom left, 0-1775. The photograph has the stamp of the Asheville Chamber of Commerce where Masa was the official photographer for a time. This item is from the Hart Masa Collection, a collection of photographs, publications, postcards, correspondence, and ephemera related to the life and work of photographer George Masa. Known for his iconic images of the Southern Appalachian Mountains and his advocacy for the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Masa also produced commercial work for private businesses, publishers, news services, and other entities. The Hart Masa Collection was assembled by donors William A. Hart, Jr., and Alice Huff Hart, who provided much of the contextual information for the items in this collection.
