Description

This Acme Newspictures press photograph shows the Biltmore Forest Country Club pool. The photographer is George Masa (1885-1933) and the photograph is dated April 29, 1930. Masa’s identifying number is illegible in the left corner but may be O-2841. It is believed that this image is part of the press photographs taken during Governor Al Smith’s visit to Asheville in 1928. Alfred E. Smith was governor of New York from 1923-1928. This item is from the Hart Masa Collection, a collection of photographs, publications, postcards, correspondence, and ephemera related to the life and work of photographer George Masa. Known for his iconic images of the Southern Appalachian Mountains and his advocacy for the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Masa also produced commercial work for private businesses, publishers, news services, and other entities. The Hart Masa Collection was assembled by donors William A. Hart, Jr., and Alice Huff Hart, who provided much of the contextual information for the items in this collection.
