Description
This photograph has written on the reverse, “Tennessee – North Carolina Border, Big Smoky Mountains from Forneys Ridge on the side of Clingmans Dome, Elevation 6642 ft.” and was taken by George Masa (1885-1933). In 2024 Clingmans Dome was restored to its original name of Kuwohi. The peak on the left edge of the photograph is Silers Bald. What may be a logging rail grade is evident (lower right of center) and evidence of logging appears center up to the crest of what is possibly Mount Buckley. Norwood Lumber Company owned and logged this boundary. Kuwohi is behind the dead tree and Mount LeConte is in the background. This item is from the Hart Masa Collection, a collection of photographs, publications, postcards, correspondence, and ephemera related to the life and work of photographer George Masa. Known for his iconic images of the Southern Appalachian Mountains and his advocacy for the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Masa also produced commercial work for private businesses, publishers, news services, and other entities. The Hart Masa Collection was assembled by donors William A. Hart, Jr., and Alice Huff Hart, who provided much of the contextual information for the items in this collection.
