Jack Carpenter holding an unfinished fish carving in front of a work table, c. 1950-1960. Brasstown Carver Jack Carpenter (b. 1933) grew up in Robbinsville, NC. He first came to John C. Campbell Folk School as a woodcarving student in the 1950s. Jack worked in the Folk School's woodshop for decades, primarily cutting wood blocks into rough shapes for the Brasstown Carvers.
