Description
Mary Frances Davidson was an expert at using vegetable dyes to color fiber. She taught at Penland Craft School and was a regular at Southern Highland Handicraft Guild Fairs for many, many years. She is shown here transferring yarn from a bobbin to a skein. The skein is being wound on a "squirrel cage" a spinning tool with two rotating "cages" to carry the yarn. The photograph was probably taken by Bernice Stevens at the Craftsman's Fair of the Southern Highlands in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, July 1949.
