Description
This image of Bald River Falls in the Cherokee National Forest was taken by Albert Gordon "Dutch" Roth (1890-1974) and is in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. The club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Established in Knoxville, Tennessee, the first official club hike was led by Roth, an employee of the Southern Railroad and an avid photographer, in December 1924. Hiking most weekends, Roth carried a Kodak camera and sometimes brought along a heavy tripod. His photographs capture long distance views of the Great Smoky Mountains and document the early activities of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club.
