Description

This photograph, of snow-covered Parson Bald (left) and Gregory Bald (center background along the Appalachian Trail taken from Yellow Creek Mountain, is in the records of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. The photographer, Albert Gordon "Dutch" Roth (1890-1974), was an employee of the Southern Railroad and an avid photographer. The club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Established in Knoxville, Tennessee, the first official club hike was led by Roth in December 1924. Apparently, Roth did not print his images as these are stamped “Jim Thompson Co. Knoxville Master Photo Finishers,” indicating they were probably printed by fellow hiking club member James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976).
