Description

Amy’s story “Putting up for the Winter” begins the program with recollections of the fall harvest and the work of preserving and saving food for the winter. “Amaranth” by Bill Mize accompanies the story. Doreyl’s guest on Creative Corner is Norma Hendrix of Sylva, Executive Director of Cullowhee Mountain ARTS, a program which is dedicated to allowing adults and youth to spend time studying the arts with well-known teachers and artists. “Down to the River to Pray” by the Muses follows the interview. On Stories of Mountain Folk, Amy talks with Kathy Wilson, who moved to Sylva in the 1980s from western Tennessee. She talks about meeting Arvel and Jane Greene, 1980 Mountain Heritage Award winners, from whom she learned about mountain life and customs. The interview is followed by “Home across the Blue Ridge Mountains” by Earl Taylor. On Black Roots of Appalachia, Victoria hosts Ida Jean Allen Bryson of Webster. She talks about growing up in the Little Savannah area. Ida Jean recalls joining the Women’s Army Corps and her time in the service. “Blind Now & Led by a Child” by the Cockman Family follows the interview. On Down Another Road, Judy talks with her friend Sheila Kay Adams, one of nine winners of the 2013 NEA National Heritage Fellowships. Sheila talks about her experience receiving this prestigious award. “Dixie Darlin’” by Sheila Kay Adams follows the interview, and the program closes with “Blackberry Blossom” by Colin Martin.
