Western Carolina University -- History
Description
Amy’s story “Professor Charles Tinkham” begins a three-part story about how Amy came to write her family’s history and become a storyteller. Charles Tinkham was her writing professor at Purdue University-Calumet, and Amy shares how he encouraged her to write. “Here Comes the Sun” accompanies the story. Doreyl’s guest on Creative Corner is Jack Sholder, director of Western Carolina University’s Film & Television Production program. He talks about how he came to work at the university and the classes he and his colleagues teach. The interview is followed by “Wildwood Flower” by Henry Queen. On Stories of Mountain Folk, Amy talks with Irene Bishop Hooper. She was born in Cullowhee and has spent most of her life there, and she shares some of her memories of growing up in the early 1930s on what is now the Western Carolina University campus. “Chasin’ Grayson” by the Company Store follows the interview. On Black Roots of Appalachia, Victoria continues her conversation with Reverend Wanda Jean Howell Moore. Wanda talks some more about her schooling in Connecticut and shares some of her work experiences, as well as what brought her back to Sylva and her ministerial experiences. “Dueling Banjos” by the Ross Brothers follows the interview. Judy’s guest on Down Another Road is Ann Hayes McDonald of Mills River in Henderson County. She talks about her family’s history in Mills River and shares some memories of her youth. The interview is followed by “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” by Ron Smith, and “Lonesome Polly Ann” by the Blue Ridge Rounders wraps up the show.
