Description
In this letter of February 23, 1864, Philip Misimer (1806-1885) writes his “Dear brother,” Henry Marshall Misemer (1832-1865) from Gentryville Missouri, his home. Philip had a hard time locating Henry Marshall and is satisfied that he has found him fighting for the Union, as is his son, Felix. He says that most of the family are secessionist. He says he doesn’t always trust those fighting for the Union, as they are often trying to avoid being jailed or fined. He says “I don’t think any compromise but the mouth of the cannon and the point of the bayonet will ever bring permanent peace. This with the destruction of slavery.” He wants to know where various family members stand on the war, including John and William Misemer, their uncle, Jacob Bible, and the Bible family in general. He talks about the price of beef and pork and says that many of the hogs died of cholera and it is believed that the people who helped take care of the hog meat have died as well. He makes sure that Henry Marshall is prepared for death and prays that the “lives of the brave patriots may be spared.”
